Lois

Lois Williams was in a state of despair when she received notice that a finance company was initiating a foreclosure action against her. Her husband had recently died and she was in a difficult financial situation. She used what little savings she had to pay for her husband's burial and without his income, she simply did not have enough money to make mortgage payments. She had made several partial payments but had quit making payments completely for about three months.

Lois was told about Kentucky Legal Aid by a friend who had seen KLA's public access video program on foreclosures. She met with an experienced housing attorney who discussed options. After considering refinancing her home under a federal program, Lois decided to negotiate a deed in lieu of foreclosure and to move to a smaller and more affordable apartment. Lois was able to convey her home and avoid a deficiency judgment and court costs. She is relieved to be in affordable housing and to have avoided foreclosure and a judgment against her.
